Kara let the hot water run over her body. It felt like it would be ages before she got all the ash out of her hair and skin. She hated fires - especially when they were started by Kryptonite-powered maniacs looking to get your attention. Her body ached all over, and she wanted nothing more than to collapse into bed for a few hours and forget about this night.

It wasn't going to happen. That much became clear the second she stepped out of the shower. It wasn't a loud sound, more like a quiet whimpering, but it was clear she wasn't alone in the apartment. A quick glimpse with her heat vision indicated a human figure in the next room. Quickly changing from her bathrobe to her costume, Kara flew into the next room, grabbing the figure.

"Cassie?"

Kara stared into the eyes of her former best friend. She stunk of cheap liquor, and her bloodshot eyes looked as if she had been crying. For a second, Kara flashed back to the way Cassie had coldly told her she wanted her out of the Titans and out of her life. What she had been planning to do to the intruder still didn't seem like such a bad idea.

"What the hell are you doing here, Cassie?"

Cassie looked down at the floor, avoiding Kara's steely gaze. "I...I saw you get beat up on TV. I had to make sure you were..."

"I'm fine, okay? What do you care, anyway? I thought we were done. You're the one who didn't want to be around another Kryptonian, right?"

Cassie responded to this by throwing up on Kara's floor.

"Geez, how much have you been drinking, anyway?"

"Too much. I thought...I mean, Metallo's got Kryptonite. I was really scared..."

Kara helped Cassie over to the couch. "Look, just stay there. You shouldn't be flying like this. Let me make you some coffee to sober you up."

"Thanks. You're a good friend..."

Kara felt the anger she had been supressing boil up again. "Not good enough, apparently."

Cassie buried her head in the pillows on the couch, trying to block out the sound of Kara's tense voice. "I had to...get rid of you. I had to."

"Why? I still don't get it. So you're trying to get over Conner. I don't get why that means you have to lose your friends. It's not my fault I'm Kryptonian, Cassie! I thought...we had something special for a while there. But I guess I was wrong."

Cassie's voice was faint now, and choked with emotion. Kara could barely hear her as she whispered into the pillow.

"I had to get rid of you before you died too."

Kara dropped the cup of coffee, not caring as it shattered on the floor. "What's that supposed to mean? Why would I die because we were friends?"

"Everything I love dies, Kara. Conner, Bart...now Tim's starting to scare me. You were so perfect, so beautiful....I could feel myself starting to fall in love with you. I had to get rid of you."

Kara knelt next to Cassie. "I didn't know. You told me it was because I reminded you too much of Conner."

"It was....You reminded me of exactly how I felt when I was with him."

"God, Cassie. Why didn't you just tell me?"

"....Didn't want to ruin what we had. Stupid, huh?"

Kara ran her hands through Cassie's hair. "You want to know a secret?"

"What?"

"I think I'm falling in love with you too."

Kara gently leaned over and kissed Cassie on the lips, getting a faint whiff of apple vodka with the kiss. "But you ever try to get rid of me again, and there'll be hell to pay."

"God, this hangover is going to be killer in the morning."

Kara smiled as she crawled onto the couch, wrapping her arms around Cassie. "Don't worry. I'll be right there till it lifts."

Kara felt Cassie drift off into sleep in her arms. Finally, everything seemed to be right again.
